Best Cooling Sleep Systems of 2026

A cooling sleep system actively pulls heat out of the bed so you stop waking up hot. There are two approaches: water-based systems (Eight Sleep, ChiliPad) circulate chilled water through a pad or mattress for precise, quiet, surface-level cooling, and air-based systems (BedJet) duct climate-controlled air under the sheets for less but cheaper cooling with nothing to refill.

We compared the leading systems on how cold they get, precision and noise, tracking features, and total cost including any subscription. Here are the picks, a comparison table, and the questions worth answering before you buy.

Scores are editorial, set with our scoring methodology. Prices are tracked live across retailers and update automatically. HealthIndex may earn a commission from links on this page, which never affects our scores or picks.

Frequently asked questions

Water cooling or air cooling?

Water systems (Eight Sleep, ChiliPad) circulate chilled water through a surface you lie on, giving precise, quiet, consistent cooling — but there is a pad to maintain and water to top up. Air systems (BedJet) blow climate-controlled air under the covers: cheaper and maintenance-free, but less precise and you feel airflow. For the deepest, most consistent cooling, water wins; for value and simplicity, air does.

Mattress, pad, or air — which format?

Eight Sleep is a cover that turns your mattress into a smart bed (and tracks sleep); ChiliPad is a pad that lays on top of any mattress; BedJet ducts air under your existing bedding. If you want tracking and the most integrated experience, the smart cover is it. If you want cooling without replacing or covering your setup, a pad or air system is simpler.

Do these have a subscription?

Eight Sleep requires a membership for its full features and auto-adjustments. ChiliPad and BedJet do not require any subscription. As with sleep trackers, factor the recurring cost into the total when comparing the smart-mattress tier against a pad or air system.

Can a couple set different temperatures?

Yes on the dual-zone systems: Eight Sleep and ChiliPad both offer independent left/right temperatures so each side of the bed can run warmer or cooler. BedJet offers a dual-zone version for couples as a separate configuration. If you and your partner disagree on temperature, dual-zone is the feature to prioritize.
